The tour
Sternfahrt Sineu/Petra BASIC
BASIC with us does not mean worse, it means leaner. You ride the same central Mallorca as on the big sternfahrt: Porto Colom, the villages around Costitx and Búger, the market at Sineu, the wild beach of Son Serra de Marina. You get the same maps, the same GPX files, the same arrows on the signs and the same hotline. What is missing are the extras: pa amb oli, the wine tasting and the van that takes you out to Selva.
In return you get a stage of your own: the Camí de Sa Vall and the Via Verde to Manacor, under your own steam and without a transfer, and for many of our guests the finest of the week. And you save money.
Two houses to choose from
The village house Sa Barcella in Sineu with breakfast in the patio and a pool out the back, or the Casal de Petra, a simple, clean petit hotel in the village of Petra without breakfast. That you pick up at the baker on the square, where a cortado costs 1.50 euros. If you want to try this week for the first time, you are in the right place.
Who is BASIC for?
For anyone who enjoys organising things but does not want to plan everything. For couples who would rather sit in a celler in the evening than at a booked wine tasting. And for anyone who simply wants to see whether cycling on Mallorca is their thing. We would bet it is. If you do not believe us, try it.

Your route day by day
Six stages, and each morning you decide how far you go today.
Arrival on Saturday. You come by train from Palma to Sineu or by taxi to Petra, and we tell you exactly how beforehand. In the afternoon we meet at the house, set the bikes up and go through the six stages with you. Maps, GPX and the hotline number go straight into your hands.
BASIC means the riding is the same as on the big sternfahrt, only the extras are missing. No matter: the cellers of Sineu make up for any wine tasting.

Sunday, do not forget your swimming things! Through Vilafranca with its garage shops, Felanitx and Cas Concos you roll down to the south-east coast at Porto Colom. There are places to stop at the harbour, and the beach at S’Arenal is two and a half kilometres further on.
This stage is the only one of the BASIC week with a transfer: in the evening we collect you and the bikes at the beach and bring you back to Sineu or Petra. All the other stages are loops from the front door.

Today you head for the centre of the island, through wide fields and villages where time seems to have stopped: Costitx, Lloret, Llubí, Búger. If you are after a sporting challenge, ride up the Puig de Santa Magdalena, 510 metres at six per cent. Psst, you can also ride around it.
Back in Sineu or Petra you take the evening as you please. A loop with no transfer, entirely at your own pace.

Along old connecting lanes right across the island to the foot of the Tramuntana. In Montuïri the village tavern is worth a pa amb oli, and after that the route runs through the vineyards of Binissalem to Santa Maria. If you would like to visit a bodega, tell us beforehand and we will gladly book it.
The way back is BASIC style: from Santa Maria you take the train towards Inca and get off again at Sineu, with the bike travelling free. Or you ride the 25 kilometres back through Sencelles. Your choice.

Wednesday is market day in Sineu, from nine o’clock. The oldest market on the island, where livestock is still sold on a handshake and the farmers bring whatever is ripe. After that the route takes you through Maria de la Salut to Petra and back across the fields.

Our newest stage replaces the van to Selva in the BASIC week, and we think it is every bit the equal of its big brother. We went out again to find those slightly different cycling lanes through woods and fields, and took in two Mallorcan classics: the Camí de Sa Vall and the Camí de Sa Carrossa to Sant Llorenç.
From there it is on to the Via Verde, the old railway line with a few tunnels and picnic spots, as far as Manacor. From there it is only a few kilometres back to Petra or Sineu. If you want more, extend through the villages and it becomes 62.

Friday, the last riding day: along long straights and private lanes to the hotel-free coastal village of Son Serra de Marina. Do not forget your swimming things! Sa Canova is for us the finest wild beach on the island, and the El Sol Sunshine Bar sits right in front of it.
The way back runs through the pine woods, where tortoises, sheep and black pigs may cross your path. A happy ending straight out of a film, in the BASIC version too.

What guests ask us beforehand
The region and five of the six stages are the same. BASIC leaves out the transfers (apart from the ride back from Porto Colom), the pa amb oli in Montuïri and the wine tasting. Instead of the van transfer to Selva you ride the stage along the Camí de Sa Vall and the Via Verde to Manacor. And at the Casal de Petra there is no breakfast in the house.
By train: from Santa Maria towards Inca and off again at Sineu, with the bike travelling free. Or you ride the 25 kilometres back through Sencelles, which is flat and lovely. Your choice.
You only ride alone if you want to. Our tours are unguided: you set your own pace and your own breaks, and there is no group to keep up with. In our experience a small group forms on the first evening and heads off together. You do not have to find anything: you get maps, GPX files for your phone or GPS and our arrows on the road signs. And if something does come up, we are on the phone.
If you ride 40 kilometres along a flat route at home on a weekend, you are fit enough. The stages are 40 to 70 kilometres, easy to moderate, with plenty of stops in places where stopping is a pleasure. There are no big climbs, and the ones that get in the way can be ridden around. On an e-bike it is more relaxed still.
Then you take it off. On a sternfahrt you sleep in the same house every night, so the day is simply free: pool, market, train to Palma. On the PetitHotel Tour we will take you on to the next house with the luggage if you like. And if your legs give up out on the road, our biketaxi comes for you: your location on WhatsApp is enough.
On the sternfahrten you unpack once and leave your case in the room all week. On the PetitHotel Tour we drive your luggage from house to house, and it is in the room before you get off the bike. For the day you get a pannier and a handlebar bag for your maps.
